Wondering if designing print on demand posters is a great side hustle? Finally putting in the work to make the art you love? Here are 13 poster printing companies to use!
Print on demand is the process of selling artwork to be printed onto products such as t-shirts, tote bags, tumblers, blankets and even leggings. For every order received, fulfillment companies will print designs onto a customer’s selected products and ship directly to them. Profit is kept by the designers.
I started print on demand without a single knowledge and made my first sale within a month! A customer printed my design on a cushion cover. It’s nice to know someone somewhere is sleeping on designs I’ve made but it was surprising that my newbie design got sold.
In this article, I’ll be sharing 13 best poster fulfillment sites you can use to design and print posters on demand. To make things easier, I’ve included a list of other home decor products you can design as well as integrations these sites offer.

1. Printify
Looking to design a few different types of posters? Printify has a wide range for you to explore. There’s over 20 types of posters you can sell including framed ones. Even if you’re not looking for poster printing in USA and want to sell to a global audience, Printify allows it. They partner with multiple printing facilities across the world where most are able to ship worldwide (at reasonable charges).
If you’re a complete beginner in white label, Printify is the best custom poster site to join – thanks to their competitive prices and wide-ranging products. Once your business grows, consider subscribing to Printify Premium to save about 23% on product cost!

2. Printful
There isn’t a lot posters you can sell on Printful compared to Printify but they still offer similar framed ones. Aside from the usual paper material, Printful does not have posters with satin, silk or fine art finishing.
In most of my POD guides, I find Printful to be more expensive than Printify. It is also the case for posters. The cheapest matte poster on Printful starts from $7, while it’s only less than $4 on Printify (and more choices). These costs adds up and affects your margins!
Their framed posters on the other hand, are not so different in cost. So if you’re interested in Printful, that’s a good product to leverage on!
This is a sample of Printful’s poster I created using one of their quick designs. No file was uploaded on my part but I still got to customize the colors and design placements to my liking.

3. Gelato
To my surprise, there are some unique poster pieces you can sell with Gelato. It might be bias, but these mockup images just play such a huge role at giving a good first impression. That’s why, using premium mockup generators like Placeit is always a good move.
Just like Printify, Gelato fulfills their orders in multiple countries worldwide and where possible, orders are fulfilled locally (according to customer’s address). This speeds turnaround time and ensures customers are happy!
Most posters on Gelato can be made in 32 countries. I personally like the museum-quality matte paper as these are archival and prints would last forever!
Here’s a sample of one of Gelato’s best posters (premium matte paper) I created using a seamless pattern design from Creative Fabrica. All I did was upload the image file, made it a pattern using Gelato’s scaling tool.
A nice one for kids!

No finishing is right or wrong, and it depends on the type of art you’re printing plus the use. Will you be printing a photo or a regular poster? Will you be displaying it in your bedroom or at an outdoor restaurant?
Although posters are easy items to design, Gooten still provides templates in JPG and PSD for you to refer to. This ensures your designs fit perfectly within the print areas, avoiding frames where applicable.
Similar to the sites above, Gooten is a fully white label fulfillment company and your customers will not receive anything with their branding.

How to Sell Posters With Print On Demand
1. Choose a niche for your print on demand posters
Choose 1 main niche for your print on demand posters. Think of niches you’re personally interested in and make a list of five. Go through them again, see what resonates to you the most and if they’re easy to start.
Some popular niches for the poster category are traveling, beauty, hustle living and abstract. I personally collected world maps and abstract prints from IKEA, way before I knew about print on demand.
2. Do research on what kind of designs you should make
In every niche, there are best selling designs you could leverage on and untapped areas for you to explore. Use tools like Merch Informer to analyze demand for designs on Amazon but never copy!
Always check for trademarks by using Merch By Amazon Trademark Protection. Stay away from using any designs that are flagged for trademark.
3. Create your own designs or outsource to freelancers
If you’re great at making designs yourself, you’re able to start with lower cost. Use tools like Kittl (easiest for beginners), Photoshop, Procreate (for drawings on iPad) and Affinity Designer (for Mac).
I personally use Canva Pro since you can make designs with transparent backgrounds and download them in custom sizes with high resolutions. No software downloads as everything is in the clouds – very beginner friendly especially if your computer isn’t efficient.
However, if you’re a marketer at heart and want to scale faster, outsourcing your designs might be a feasible option. You can get designers on Fiverr from as low as $10 per design or use Upwork freelancers for an hourly rate.
4. Sign up for print on demand platform of your choice
Now that you have designs ready to be sold, you need a fulfillment company to print them. Choose any I’ve recommended above!
If you’re a complete beginner and have zero knowledge on promoting your products, I highly suggest that you use Redbubble or similar sites to it. Everything is done within the same platform – you just need to upload designs and wait for sales.
Excited to explore greater opportunities? Printify and Printful are great fulfillment companies if you decide to sell your designs on sites like Etsy, integrate with a Shopify store or even Woocommerce (you have your own website).
Unsure which to pick? Find out why I recommend using Printify for beginners against Printful.
Within the Printify and Printful dashboard, you’ll need to update your personal details and payment details like PayPal. For every customer order you receive, they’ll charge your preferred payment directly before printing and shipping out.
5. Upload your designs to suitable products
All the platforms have pretty similar categories with different product types. Materials used for posters and art prints differ greatly across platforms and quality is different too.
Printful offers three types of paper for print on demand posters. This includes matte paper and luster paper. The luster paper is a little more expensive but has greater color pay off compared to the matte paper.
Printify on the other hand has more choices including silk posters, satin posters and fine art posters. Their cheapest matte poster starts only at $3.97! Almost half of Printful’s $6.95.
It’s always wise to order samples of your own designs to have a good look and feel. You can even do your own mini product photoshoot!
Your decision on the type of product varies greatly depending on the artwork you’ll be printing, your target market and if you want a more premium feel. Every material speaks a different language to your customers.
6. Decide on your sale margin and set a price
I always believe that a 50% margin is good to start with. It’s always much easier to lower your prices than bring it up. This is especially true when selling on Etsy and your own websites, you’ll have to account for ad expenses and fees.
If you’re not too serious with the business and don’t plan to put in a lot of work into marketing your own designs, a simple 20-30% margin will do. Society6 allows designers to set a higher margin for posters (against their normal 10%) and you’re free to set any price for Redbubble (their standard is 20%).
7. Generate mockups for your designs to make it look real
Mockups are automatically generated for marketplaces so you really don’t have to do anything there – though they don’t look real, everyone is using the same mockups.
Since you’ll have to compete better on Etsy and leave a greater impression for your own sites, good realistic mockups are important. Both Printify and Printful have in-house mockups which is much better than the standard.
If you decide to use other white label sites, you might want to consider using tools like Placeit for professional mockups. It’ll make you stand out better! For a small fee, you’ll have access to all kinds of mockups.
You can also get complimentary access to Placeit’s mockups within Canva Pro – much easier!
8. Display the product design at your chosen store
Set prices and have your product displayed at your store. Your designs are automatically synced to your chosen store and will be displayed in minutes for sale.
Most sites will keep designs in drafts if you didn’t click submit.
9. Repeat the process until you have a collection of designs
The surest way to make sales is to have more designs. This allows your products to be seen by a lot more people. They would be drawn to your shop and end up purchasing more than one item.
This is exactly what I did that got 3 of my designs sold in one purchase. Each of them were in the same niche and correlated to each other so they would make a complete collection of cushions at home. Some people need a pair or two pairs of each thing!
Things to Consider for Print On Demand Posters
Just like any other products, here are some things to consider when selecting the right type of poster for print on demand.
1. Type of material and quality of print
Most posters are archival type, made of museum paper to last a lifetime. However, each fulfillment company offers different types of posters with different qualities. Find out which is best for your design, take into account the look and feel when printed by ordering your own samples.
2. Posters are framed or unframed
Something commonly asked is would these posters include a frame? Unless there’s a frame clearly included in the product mockup, products will come bare without one. A framed poster is more expensive – consider the cost of the item itself and extra weight for shipping charges.
3. Packaging of posters for shipping
Not all posters are made or shipped equal! As an example, Redbubble ships posters in envelopes while Society6 ships in parcels. Most posters will come in rolled formats so you’ll have to straighten them out (unless there’s a frame). In worst cases, they’ll have cripples on the side.
These factors might affect customers’ rating for your product. Using bigger packaging (a parcel against an envelope) is not ideal for the environment. And if my posters are rolled up, it might leave marks on the poster itself and I wouldn’t like it.
There’s a chance that the difference in packaging used might be the reason why some products are more expensive than others.
4. Profit margin for each sale made
Profit is important depending on how you’re looking to grow your print on demand side hustle.
Platform | Profit margins for posters |
---|---|
Printify | Free to price |
Printful | Free to price |
Redbubble | Starts at 20% |
Society6 | Starts at 10% |
Another site I’ve not listed above is Inprnt – they’re dedicated to only art prints and posters. Inprnt offers margins up to 50% but artists are either invited or have their artwork submission voted and approved.
Unless you’re a professional artist (I’m not), this might not the best way to start your print on demand side hustle.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Printful is great for making art prints with a variety of paper offered. The luster paper is semi gloss and has better color pay off compared to matte ones. Printful has great qualities of paper and printing. Customers are allowed to order and test 3 products per month at discounted rates for samples.
You can dropship posters with print on demand. Simply upload designs to print on demand fulfillment websites like Printify or Printful. Then start selling these products on Etsy or your own Shopify ecommerce store. Just like dropshipping, print on demand requires almost zero cost to start.
Bottom Line
A print on demand poster business is pretty straightforward to set up. The biggest hurdles one might have is to make the artwork and figure out the best online poster printing to go with.
Bear in mind, though POD marketplaces are generally much easier to start with, you’ll have to put in some extra effort to stand out. In time, you’ll accumulate valuable experience to help you start your own brand. Once you’re ready, Printify and Printful offers the best poster printing service for new POD sellers.
