How To Start A Print On Demand Tie Dye T-Shirt Business
1. Choose a niche for your store
A lot of people skip this step because they just can’t decide on one niche. Some just want to do everything under the sky but the truth is, most of us can’t. Choosing a niche is more than just deciding a theme for your brand, it’s about focusing to make your overall process smoother and to push your initial growth.
So, even if you have decided on making an all tie dye print on demand shop, think of a micro-niche to focus on. What kind of designs go well on tie dye t-shirts? What is the main audience you believe your tie dye products will attract? Make designs with these in mind!
Some niches I would recommend are vintage wear, pastel designs or female feminism. Check out these super cool vintage tie dye samples – for inspiration only!
2. Decide to sell on Etsy or Shopify website
Once you have decided on your niche, it’s time to decide where you’ll be selling your products. If you’re a complete beginner looking to make print on demand a side hustle, selling on Etsy is your best bet – free listings for you. Here are some reasons why I think it would work for you (or even anyone!).
Alternatively, there’s so many ecommerce platforms that could sync with Printify (see here) so you’re open to explore others. Selling on Shopify and other ecommerce platforms does require some technical knowledge to manage your own website and bring in traffic for sales.
3. Pick a fulfillment company that aligns with your goals
Printify is one of the best fulfillments to join when starting out with print on demand as they offer great products and have a ton of resources online to help you navigate. However, they’re not the only ones you can join. You can even sell products from multiple fulfillment companies in one single ecommerce store – although I don’t recommend complicating your operations this way in the beginning.
Some other fulfillments you can join that offer print on demand tie dye products include Uberprints, Apliiq and AOP.Plus. Unfortunately, Printify’s major competitor, Printful, does not offer anything tie dye except this tie dye bucket hat.
4. Browse and pick a product you want to sell
Printify has a few options of tie dye t-shirts to choose from – you can browse here. If you’re only focusing on offering tie dye products in your shop, I suggest selling all types of tie dye products you can get. This does not only increase the number of products you offer but also increases the chances of you making a sale. Not rocket science if you sell both t-shirts and crop tops!
5. Make designs based on recommended dimensions
Before making your designs, get more info on the right dimensions suitable for the product you’re making. If you’re making tie dye t-shirts, dimensions are pretty straightforward and does not require tweaking to a specific layout or shape – compared to tumblers, phone cases, leggings or dresses. Regardless, it’s still important to take note of the pixel required for high quality printing – you don’t want blurry pixelated designs!
6. Upload ready designs to products
Uploading designs to final products is a super straightforward process. All you need to do is ensure the design is positioned correctly on the tie dye t-shirt and fix alignments if needed. What you see when uploading is what your customers will get delivered to their doorstep, so do it right ONCE! You can save the product templates after uploading and come back to it later to make changes, it won’t go anywhere.
Stretch the green box to a size you want and ensure design is within the dashed line box. Also, adding a design to the back side will increase product cost!
7. Sync products to your ecommerce store
When you’re ready to start putting in products to your ecommerce store, revisit your products within the Printify dashboard and click on the product you want to sync. You can save as draft or click publish once done.
8. Price your products and start selling!
For every sale you make on Etsy or even your Shopify website, there will be some costs that will reduce your profit margins. Ideally to avoid potential losses, you need to consider these costs before even setting a price. If this sounds all too complicated for you, a 40-50% margin rule may do the trick in the beginning. This should cover listing fees, fees on each sale made and advertising expenses you’ll invest in to get your brand exposed.
This might just be one of the toughest parts of making a listing but once that’s over, you’re ready to start selling!
9. Create impressive product mockups
You are able to generate pretty nice mockups within Printify’s dashboard itself, no extra tools needed. If you want to go beyond the norm, Placeit have some options you can choose from although it’s quite limited for tie dye products. Alternatively, order some samples of your own by paying for the product’s cost and conduct your own mini photoshoot whether it’s at home, in your lawn or at the skate park. It would be cool to have real life photos of the actual products for customers to feel even more convinced to make a purchase.
Trust me good photos go a long way!
10. Repeat the process to build your product collection
The number one advice I have for anyone starting out print on demand is to regularly make and upload new designs even if it’s for the same products. Many underestimate long term success by only focusing on today’s wins. Have a long term goal in mind for the number of good designs your store should have. Focus on doubling down on winning designs instead of making designs that clearly don’t sell.
A good first aim should be 100 quality designs for you to learn, repeat and scale later on.
Key Things To Consider For Print On Demand Tie Dye
- Actual look of tie dye product once printed
Going through Printify’s tie dye products, you’ll find a line mentioning “Slight color variations may occur due to the dyeing process”. If you’re a fan of tie dyes, you know this is perfectly normal. However, it’s not safe to assume that your customers will be okay with seeing these slight differences. To protect yourself, have this disclaimer included in product descriptions and consider ordering the actual product yourself so you know what to expect.
- Look of design against product base color
When designing for print on demand products, it’s pretty simple to decide what colors would work on a dark colored t-shirt against a lighter colored one. It may not be as straightforward for tie dye products due to the multiple colors present. So how do you decide what works? I’m not a color scientist but it helps to learn this great theory on how to choose colors for your designs (even if there’s more than 3 colors)!
- How to care for your tie dye t-shirt
Most people are wary of buying a tie dye product because it might release colors that will stain other outfits when washed together. Due to past experiences (not with print on demand), I’m equally guilty of having this worry! Printify has included care instructions for each of their products but it does not hurt for you to do your own experiment.
You can read more on the general way to care for tie dye shirts so it stays vibrant here.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
With print on demand, anyone can make tie dye t-shirts with prints online. All you need to do is sign up to a fulfillment site such as Printify and upload your print designs to tie dye t-shirt products. You can order for yourself or sell to the public by syncing products to your ecommerce store.
Printify makes selling personalized tie dye t-shirts online possible for almost anyone. When selling on third party marketplaces like Etsy, set your order approval to “Manual” and offer Personalization for the product on both ends. Customers can personalize to include names and other details.
Bottom Line
Building a print on demand tie dye business isn’t as complicated as you think it is. All you need to do is follow the steps I’ve listed above and give yourself time to test designs to see what works.
The beauty of print on demand is you won’t know what works until you’ve done everything needed – and even if it doesn’t, there isn’t much loss to you either.
